Our Mission—Empower
Kibo is not your average nonprofit. We’re an international network of friends with a radical vision: to empower every community in the Busoga region of Uganda to holistically and sustainably transform.

What makes us different?
Sustainable Transformation
Sustainable transformation takes time. We spend months getting to know and gaining the trust of our partner communities.
Local Empowerment
We empower locals to solve complex problems. Good questions are better than imported solutions!
Community Focused
We work with the whole person and the whole community. Instead of rescuing individuals from bad situations, we facilitate change to make the situation better for everyone.
Our Impact
Kibo’s work spans far beyond impressive numbers on a spreadsheet (which we have). Our total impact is more difficult to quantify. It is rooted in community change, in families being repaired, in generational wounds being broken, in relationships being restored.
Holistic
Aware that it’s important to pay attention to the physical, social, and spiritual dimensions of both human suffering and community flourishing, we try our best to gain a comprehensive understanding of how poverty and wealth impact our partner communities.
Asset-Based
We assume each community we work with has abundant cultural, intellectual, and material assets, even if often unrecognized and underdeveloped. Kibo teams then equip community members to identify and mobilize existing assets in creative ways.
Sustainable
Our work is a marathon, not a sprint. We pursue progress through long-term cultural participation, education, and reconciliation efforts that produce lasting and locally maintainable results. Our goal is always to phase out and allow the community take over.
